Windlesham’s commitment to its junior section is highlighted by the clubs scholarship programme. Now in its second year, the programme looks to reward those who commit themselves to the game and the club by providing them with a membership and coaching scholarship worth up to £750 per year. Scholarships are awarded based on performance in a number of criteria throughout the season as part of the Academy Cup order of merit event.
Girls Scholarship Initiative
One of Windlesham’s priorities is to create a thriving girls section. At present there are three girls with a full scholarship at the club and this is expected to increase to 8 within the next 12 months. The club is actively looking for girls who are committed to the game and who will be committed to helping the club build a great girls junior section.[box border=”full”] “This scholarship has given me a really great opportunity to improve my game. The Academy lessons give me the chance to improve my technique, especially my swing.
The Skills Days are also really good fun but also give you a chance to see how each part of your game has improved as we are tested on various skills and having the chance to play on the course with Richard, Lee and Ben who have shown me all the many different situations which can occur throughout the game. During the course of my scholarship I know I have improved in many areas of my game and I have been able to reduce my handicap from 33 to 23 but I know I want to get my handicap even lower by the end of the year.”
Windlesham’s junior programme and its commitment to girls golf specifically is being recognised across the county, and the club’s goal of having 6 girls representing Windlesham within county teams looks easily within reach over the next few years.[box border=”full”] “Schemes like this are effective at developing girls’ golf, particularly because they create a fun and stimulating environment for girls to learn in. Girls like to play golf with other girls; so having a group of girls together makes it far more likely that they will stick with the game and ultimately succeed.
Golf provides an opportunity for players to not only participate in sport, but develop life long friendships and skills such as effective communication, responsibility and integrity. Surrey Ladies, together with the Surrey Golf Partnership, support the work of Windlesham and other similar clubs, and wish them every success.
