They Have Done It!!
The Windlesham Boys Team have made it to the Home Nations Finals in Portugal this coming February. The Event is covered by Sky Sports and features clubs from the four Home
Nations. Mike Phelps has managed the Boys Team this year and his match report is below.

“From over 1000 clubs that originally entered the Junior Team Golf Championships, the final six headed to Mannings Heath for the England National Final.
Windlesham Boys had battled through their regional qualifying round and various knock-out rounds to book their position for this event, beating last year’s winners, Burhill along the
way. Teams from as far afield as Northumberland, Halifax, Hampshire and Wiltshire were playing for two places in the Home International Finals which will be played in Portugal in February
2020. Windlesham were able to field their successful team from the previous rounds – Nathan Woodham (Capt.), Josh Gates, Max Reid, Thomas White, Kaiden Ironside and Jack Kircher
who were by far and away the youngest team to compete. The format was the same, one gross medal score and then four from the remaining five nett scores.
The pre-round tension was heightened with the presence of Sky Sports who were televising the event.
Kaiden, Nat and I had the dubious task of the pre-match interview – the boys were naturals!

With the format it is very difficult to “second guess” the final results, however when everybody was in, we knew the team from Bramshaw in Hampshire had taken the honours. It was very close for the second spot and the “Golden Ticket” to Portugal…………..after an agonising wait Windlesham were eventually announced as the runners up. The team were only four shots behind the winners and, more importantly, only four shots ahead of the third placed team, across five rounds of golf four shots is a very small margin. Whilst everyone contributed, special mention should go to Josh Gates who carded the best nett score from the entire field on the day, -5.

At some point this event is going to be screened on Sky Sports; it’s worth the licence fee alone just to see Max hole out on eighteen from 40 yards in front of the cameras! I recall playing our second match of the campaign at Camberley Heath, the boys were waiting to tee off and were asking me how hot it was going to be in Portugal!!! I felt I had to keep their feet on the ground, explaining this was a long way off – how fantastic this has now become the reality.

The Boys, the parents and Mike all deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication throughout this Journey. The boys now have a fantastic opportunity to put Windlesham Golf Club and its fantastic Academy on the map in Portugal next February.

The Boys will be starting their fundraising for the trip over the coming weeks and I know the Club and members will get behind them and wish them well in Portugal!!!!

Well done BOYS!!!”
