The Calcutta Cup Golf Challenge has been played at Windlesham Golf Club since 1998. The game is played each year on the same day as England play Scotland in the Calcutta Cup rugby match. On Saturday 16th March, 19 matches were played out between pairs playing for England and a Scotland and Rest of World team. Team England was captained by Lee Wood and team Scotland by Graham Robertson. The conditions weren’t ideal with a strong wind to contend with. However, most importantly the rain held off!

Match 1 between John Belchier and Nick Blewitt for England, and Owen Epsley and Alastair Maciver for Scotland RoW led the field off at 09:00. Lee and Graham played in Match 9 and were partnered by Sue Mitchell and Evelyn Somerville respectively.

As tradition would have it, the match results are kept secret until all matches are played and all players are back in the clubhouse. Each team, starting with match 1 are then asked to reveal their scores. Both pairs stand up and the result is revealed by the losing pair sitting down. Lee and Graham led the process, and by Match 10 the score was all tied at 5 each. Match 11 between Ruth Knowles and Victoria Westgarth for England, and Angela Kokaram and Karen Rankin for Scotland RoW went England’s way. This was followed by the eagerly anticipated result of Match 11 between Jacqui Cawley and Lynn Lambert for England, and Paul Knight and Marcus McDonnell for Scotland RoW. There were oohs and aahs in the clubhouse when the result was revealed as halved.

When all was said and done, England prevailed 11 1/2 to 7 1/2.

It was an excellent day and yet another successful Calcutta Cup event. It’s great to see that after 21 years of playing this match, the event is as popular as ever and the atmosphere it creates so positive.

Thanks go to everyone that played and in particular to the reserves who stepped in play for those that had to pull out.
