Time flies, last month I referred to the Calcutta Cup season opener and it has already come and gone! Having mentioned it, I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to thank the 76 players (19 teams) who turned out to compete in matches between the England and Scotland and Rest of World sides, and for the last time (for now anyway) repeat the score which ended 11½ to 7½ in England’s favour.

I do want to take a moment to mention that in recent months we have seen unprecedented demand from members to play competitive golf. This is great news. With that, we have also experienced larger than usual reserve lists for some competitions. For some members, playing in a competition may be their only chance to play golf that weekend. Part of the Committee’s job is to make sure members are not denied the opportunity to play the golf they want to. To this end, we will be monitoring Stableford and Medal competition start sheets and reserve lists very closely in the coming months and will take steps where we can to ensure members are able to play.

The course continues to be a topic of conversation amongst members. One of the areas being touched on is the greens and by way of an example the difference in the quality of the greens between weekdays and weekends. Feedback like this is very valuable and is always shared and or discussed with management at the Club, including the Course Manager. As you may already know, there is a course forum being held on March 27th. This is an opportunity to learn more about the short, and longer-term plans for the course. This will also be an opportunity to ask questions and get answers to specific matters that you may want to raise. If you can make the evening of March 27th at 19:00, please come along to the Club to hear from Leigh Powell, Course Manager.

The golf summer season starts on April 1st. Sign up for knock-out competitions has been very strong, for all those participating please endeavour as always to get your rounds completed on time. The first of this years’ bank holidays offer opportunities to play in various events not least of which are The Mixed Pairs Neapolitan on April 22nd, The Mixed Pairs Spencer Crow Trophy Competition on May 6th, and The Mixed Pairs Monte Carlo on May 27th.

Club Championships are going to be held over the weekend of the 6th and 7th of July. Please note that to qualify to enter you will need to have played in 4 qualifying competition events. These need to be played in qualifying competition tee slots and include the weekend Mixed All Day Stableford competitions, and the Tuesday All Day Stablefords (for men).

Finally, having won all their matches our Ladies Maple Leaf team has, subject to confirmation, made it through to the final which will be held on April 29th. Congratulations to team captain Rosemary Barton and all the ladies who have played in the matches so far for another successful Maple Leaf campaign. Congratulations also to the Pearson team, captained by Lynn Lambert for coming top of their qualifying group and winning their way to the knock out stages of the competition.

Summer is almost here, I wish you great golfing and hope for some long warm sunny days ahead.
