Last weekend was a milestone event in our calendar year, the 2018 Club Championship.

Building on the success of recent years, 150 entrants put their golfing skills to the test over two days as they attempted to win the coveted Windlesham Golf Club Championships (Ladies and Men) and the best nett competitions in their respective sections.

Blessed with fabulous weather, the early competitors took to the course at 08:00 on Saturday in a two-tee start. Perfect conditions, together with a fair and well-presented course set up formed the basis for some excellent scoring and some exciting groupings going into the second day.

On Sunday we reverted to an order of merit single tee start, and despite the earlier anticipation of a cut, everyone that wanted to play from day 1, was allocated a tee time. The first competitors teeing off at 07:00 and the final group of leading ladies and men teeing off at 13:24 and 13:40 respectively.

Despite the best efforts of her playing partners, Alexandra Phelps and Ellie Monk, Ellen Yates managed to hold her nerve and fight off stiff competition to become the Windlesham Ladies’ Club Champion 2018 with a gross score over the two days of 158. Congratulations on a remarkable achievement.

The Men’s Club Championship was also fiercely contested, and this year it was Cavan Mallon who came through at the end. Having lost out in a thrilling three-way playoff last year, Cavan managed to overturn the day one leader Callum Mackay and finish on a gross score for the two days of 148 and claim the title of Windlesham Men’s Club Champion 2018. Congratulations to Cavan and commiserations to his playing partners Callum Mackay and Daniel Taviansky who played some fantastic golf and pushed him all the way.

In the best nett competitions for Ladies and Men we add our congratulations to the following winners:

Le Barn trophy – Victoria Westgarth

Silver Medal Winner (Division 1) – David Kircher

Bronze Medal Winner (Division 2) – Andy Mills

The Club Championship is a tough event and anyone who puts themselves into the competition is to be applauded, but special congratulations go to our winners who all posted fantastic scores to come out on top.

Finally, big thanks must go to the Club Championship Organising Committee Mark Lambert, Lynn Lambert, Gill Wood and Mick Archbold; the Golf Operations team led by Jack Bamford, Leigh Powell and the green-keeping team, the restaurant and front of house service staff, our registration desk, photographer Tim Ockenden, the Rules Committee and the many volunteers who helped with marshalling and ball spotting. In addition to our players, everyone involved did a great job to make this year’s Club Championship a huge success in many ways. Thank you to everyone who took part for your involvement and contribution to a very enjoyable and successful weekend – here’s to 2019!
