Following our committee meeting on Friday and fuelled by a hearty buffet breakfast, two teams of 7 pairs took to the course for the inaugural Committee versus WGML Ryder Cup style match.

The Committee team, captained by Mick Archbold, were selected from past and existing members (albeit with a rather tenuous link via wedlock in one particular case) and were up against 14 of WGML’s finest; pro golfers, scratch players, management and greenkeepers, captained by George Rourke.

The first match teed off amidst great anticipation in both camps and neither side was let down by the quality of the opening shots taken under considerable pressure.

With all 7 matches underway, reports started coming back through the field of both good and bad golf. Oohs and aahs over missed putts and cries of ringer or bandit could be heard from both camps.

As the matches neared conclusion it was difficult to tell which way the result had gone. With all teams sworn to secrecy, the final result would not be known until the ‘big reveal’.

With all 28 players gathered in the bar, one by one the match results were announced. The Committee stormed into a 2 point lead from the first 2 matches, but WGML came back at them trailing 2 to 3 with two match results to go. Wanting to take it to the wire, the hopes of team WGML were dashed with match 6 going in favour of team Committee, giving them an unassailable 4 to 2 lead with one match remaining.

Final result 4 to 3 in favour of team Committee.

Our thanks go to all those who participated making this a thoroughly enjoyable event and especially to those who came in at short notice. In addition our thanks to Neil for providing the breakfast on behalf of WGML and Mick for providing the post-match drinks on behalf of the Committee.

A great event and a title the Committee look forward to defending next year.
