Captain’s  Update – May  2012

Well what a month April was!  It started with a few welcome rain showers and then it just kept going with rain, more rain, and then yet more rain.  The course was closed on one day and the second Captain/Pro match had to be postponed.  It has undoubtedly done the course some good and we just need some warm sunshine as we get into the busy summer season.

Despite the weather our Club teams did well.  The Surrey 5’s A & B teams both won their first matches, the Highwaymen won at Sutton Green, the Ladies beat Hoebridge at home, and the Seniors won at home against Mitcham in the first round of the Surrey Seniors Ling Trophy.  I played in the Mixed match at Guildfordwhich we halved.  My match ended on the 15th in torrential rain.  And then Jacqui Cundell and Richard Bishton won their second Fleming Foursomes title at Sunningdale Ladies – congratulations to them.

Linda Christian

Congratulations also to Linda Christian for completing the London Marathon and raising £500 for the Captains’ charity, Disability Challengers www.disability-challengers.org , and £1,400 for her chosen charity Help the Hospices.  I think I will wait a couple of weeks before asking Linda if she is going to run theMarathon again!

The Captains’ Charity Day is on Sunday June 10th.  A shotgun start at 08:30 with team and individual prizes.  The sign up sheet will go up shortly and you can sign up as teams of 4, in pairs, or individually.  There will be the usual competitions, raffles, lunch, and auction.  A big day for Wendy andI.  You can contribute in several ways; by participating on the day, sponsoring a tee, making a donation, or by giving us something to raffle or to auction. I will write to you all in the near future with more detail.

Before the Charity Day is the Jubilee weekend with a variety of events.  Watch out for details.

Alastair Higgs and his team continue the work out on the course.  The bunker changes on the 3rd and 4th holes are now finished.  The 3rd hole is now very interesting.  The ditch line to the right of the 16th has been opened up, and the greens continue to improve following the maintenance work in March.

That is it for this month.  There was no Committee meeting this month as the April one was very recent and the June one is coming soon.  I am still picking up litter on the course, so I hope you all will too.
